University (Armidale) 2

Glen Innes Highlanders 0

The bitter cold was most unwelcome at Armidale at the University grounds last Saturday. A Highlander win would cement their leadership position. University was looking to avenge a 3 - 1 defeat experienced a month ago.

For the first 35 minutes the game moved from end to end with both sides trying to get the upper hand. Chances appeared for both sides but the accuracy of both attacks lacked a killer punch. The Highlanders did enjoy most of the possession in the first half.

A moment of brilliance saw Anthony Chaffey split the defence only to see his gallant effort strike the crossbar. A Daniel Ferris left foot drive was just wide. The initial goal, one felt, would gain an enormous advantage and this goal came in the 35th minute when Hamish McTavish latched onto a rebound to find the net thus grabbing the initiative, 1-0 University.

Second half strategies received a blow minutes after the restart when Lance Fergusson found enough space in the Highlanders goal area to push in a neat shot to make the score 2 - 0 in University’s favour.

University did score again later in the second half but the goal was ruled offside. This was an improved University display from that of the previous game.

It was not to be the Highlanders’ day.

This week the Highlanders are scheduled to play The Armidale School in Armidale.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
