Highlanders 2 one step closer to finals

Division 2 has gone one step closer to a finals place after a convincing 3-0 victory over UNE on Saturday.

The Highlanders had to travel to Armidale after a bit of controversy as to where the game was to be played but Glen Innes put that behind them and showed great form leading up to the finals.

The Highlanders started the game slowly and took the first 15 minutes to work there way into the game. Josh Hutchinson worked hard at goalkeeper while the defensive line of Preston Parkes, Luke Martin, Justin Bushell and Thomas Kempton kept the UNE attack out of the game while Marcus Walsh, Dylan Ferris, Hannah McCarney and Peter Liddle worked hard in the midfield to set up strikers Shaun Mepham and Andrew Hodgson.

The Highlanders first goal came from a Shaun Mepham drive that sailed past the UNE goal keeper and Glen Innes lifted another gear and controlled play in the mid-field not allowing the home team any chance to equalise.

The Highlanders went into the half-time break with the 1-0 lead and the confidence to finish the game off well.

Nigel Sharman, Leigh Bush, Jerome Hayden and Tim Levy came off the bench and all contributed well in the game with Levy and Bush combining well to help set up Ferris for the Highlanders second goal.

Glen Innes settled play down and controlled the rest of the match with Parkes, Sharman and Kempton stifling any attempt from the UNE attack. McCarney, Ferris, Hodgson and Liddle all combined with Leigh Bush for the Highlanders third goal with the UNE keeper misjudging the bounce of the ball and Bush was in the right position to slot the ball into the back of the net.

A much more improved performance from previous weeks for the Division 2 side but still need to keep improving with the finals looming in coming weeks.

It is reminded to all players that training is on Wednesday nights at Wilson Park starting at 6.00pm.

Next week all three teams travel to Armidale once again with Divisions 1 & 2 to play TAS while Division 4 will take on Demon Knights Diebacks. There will be a bus for all players and spectators are also welcome. The cost will be $5.00 per person and will be leaving the Glen Innes Services Club car park at 10.30am on Saturday.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
