The Glen Innes Highlanders Division 2 side are back winner’s list after a 3-0 win over second place East Armidale on Saturday. After a disappointing 4 weeks with four losses in a row, Division 2 were in doubt for finals contention and needed to win to stay alive.
Glen Innes got off to a good start putting pressure on the visitors straight away and not letting in. Andrew Hodgson and Tim Levy looked dangerous up front creating opportunities, linking with mid-fielders Dylan Ferris, Marcus Walsh, Peter Cole and Hannah McCarney. The defensive cordon of Ben Norris, Justin Bushell, Thomas Kempton and Preston Parkes defended soundly and not allowing the Armidale attack past. Dom Bush showed that he is still in great form at goal keeper and kept a clean sheet once again.
Glen Innes opened the scoring with a well timed break from Kempton who found Levy open, after a well struck drive, the keeper fumbled and Hodgson who was backing up made no mistake of putting the ball in the back of the net.
After the restart, Craig Dawson and Leigh Bush came on as impact players and caused chaos for the Easts’ defence setting up opportunities but couldn’t find that extra goal. Glen Innes’ second goal came from a penalty, after a cleverly weighted through ball found Leigh Bush open who was brought down inside the 18 yard box, Dylan Ferris was given the chance to take the dot shot and put it past the keeper taking the lead 2-0.
At the half time break, the Highlanders were complimented on their game as it was an improvement from previous weeks and were told to focus on using the width of the field as much of Glen’s possession was played up the centre of the field.
Glen Innes then furthered their lead with Ferris scoring his second goal with a well struck left footer that went straight through the Easts’ keeper.
Next week all three teams are at home with Division 4 taking on TAS (The Armidale School) and Divisions 1 and 2 taking on UNE at Wilson Park with the first games kicking off at 1.00pm.
There is a reminder to for all the players that the balance of their registration is now overdue and are to pay the remainder by this weekend.
