Armidale oncology unit's festival of football

Two Glen Innes Highlanders have been selected to play a charity football match as part of Team Torbay against the Armidale and District Football Association (ADFA) President’s XI at the Rologas playing fields on Sunday August 24.

Centre midfielder Jason Reed and defender Tom Gower will take the field for Torbay’s Tablelands side.

The football charity day was orgainsed by ADFA in memory of ADFA’s former junior competition convenor Jack Vallance who passed away from cancer earlier in the year, and will raise money for the Oncology Unit at Armidale Hospital, which services the New England area.

The match between ADFA and the Tablelands will kick off at 2pm. It is pitted to be the highlight of a five match fixture commencing from 10am featuring ADFA Women’s football teams, an invitational game involving top senior players from the south and north of the association, a father versus son match and an ADFA coaches versus ADFA referees clash.

Team Torbay is comprised of the talent from Glen Innes, Walcha, Uralla, Guyra and Armidale.

Mr Torbay and Graham Parsons will take the field to man the goals for their respective teams. The Regional Manager of Northern Inland Football Deano Perrizolo will referee the main game.

“I played (soccer) back in my school days but I’m a keen spectator. My sister’s family are soccer mad so they are all coming to have a laugh at me,” Mr Torbay said. “I’ll have to give the referee strict instructions; if I look tired give me a red card and send me off.”

The local government challenge will also challenge the local community and businesses of Armidale and the wider community and businesses of the northern tablelands to be apart of the day.

“The oncology unit provides such good support to families who have been affected by cancer,” Mr Torbay said.

“It will be a fun day to help the Hospital’s Oncology unit to buy the equipment it needs.”

Armidale’s Festival of Football hopes to raise $5000 on the day. The Glen Innes and District Services Club are sponsoring the Glen Innes boys.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
