Glen Innes Elks 13 v Robb College 17
Undeterred by the small crowd at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon, the men in white put in a performance that impressed all present, including the Examiner’s editor Tim Hughes, who reportedly was so enthused by the match he has been rumoured to have been discussing with selectors his availability for a run in this weekend’s clash against the UNE Barbarians (a rumour he strongly denies).
Captain Sam Baker’s skills at the toss off shone through winning easily, electing to run with the wind and in the first 15 minutes the Elks did just that, galloping all over the paddock and their opposition like wild horses (or Elks even). An early lineout 30m out saw an accurate throw by the fiery Dan Hollingworth with a clean take at two by Baker to give Richard Salmon clean ball to deliver to Joe Tonkin who charged at the line and bustled over the top of his opposite and crash over for the first try, next to the upright.
Goal kicking being as it has, Baker entrusted the poison chalice to Tonkin who embarrassingly failed at converting his own try from in front with a drop kick attempt. This was clearly pointed out to the writer by many of the team’s goal missers, and simply could not be omitted from this report as the Examiner’s editor was watching.
Glen led 5 to nil and continued to dominate, using the wind wisely, however too many kicks didn’t find touch and this allowed the flamboyant Robb fullback to make some penetrating runs through the Elks defence. More than once these attacks were thwarted by the resolute and committed defence of the Elks backline in particular Matt Webster and Ashley Whitehead. In an attempt to avoid being hit by the “Strathbogie thrashing machine” (Whitehead), Robb began to go to the air and were rewarded on one occasion with a penalty and on a second occasion scored a lucky try when Ben Newbury got a terrible bounce. They converted and led 7 to 5.
The Elks bounced back quickly and excited onlookers as they threw the ball and ran at pace, managing to string together many consecutive phases they scored again through star Stuart ‘Hallys mate’ McClintock, his attempt at conversion unsuccessful, Elks leading 10 to 7. Robb launched a counter attack from another clearing kick that didn’t find touch, the fullback linking with wingers to score and steal the lead back 12 to 7, their conversion attempt went wide.
With minutes before the break the Elks were awarded a penalty some 35m out and Baker’s eyes gleamed as he thought of himself kicking a goal. Fortunately no one listened to the claims by Salmon or Nathan Purvis that they could kick it, Baker woke up from his dream and gave the ball to McClintock who answered the call by slotting it through, taking the Elks into the half time break with a narrow 13 to 12 lead.
Returning to the field with gusto the Elks fought hard to preserve their lead. Unfortunately the structured Robb pattern wore through the Elks defence. They managed to score an unconverted try and wrest the lead from the Elks with only ten minutes remaining. The Elks threw everything they had at Robb. Tonkin’s foray to the short side from Glen’s own 22 exposed Robb and he put star Stuart ‘Hally’s mate’ McClintock away. The dash up the sideline seemed sure to end in a try and victory for the Elks however the Robb fullback foiled the attack.
In the dying minute Ashley Whitehead appeared to legally break the line and score for the fairytale finish only to be brought back for an accidental obstruction, full time Robb wins 17 to 13.
This weekend is the last game of the competition before the looming semis and the Elks are drawn to play the UNE Barbarians in Armidale. All players and potentials are reminded that training is on Wednesday nights from 6pm.
