Mixed fortunes for junior magpies

10/07/2008 10:11:00 AM
LAST Saturday Glen Innes travelled to Uralla to be greeted by very wintery conditions. All ages played apart from the 16s who had the bye. Minor league has a break now for the following two weeks and will resume back on the July 26.

This weekend the under 10s played Uralla at Uralla, defeating them 28 to 14. The boys all put in 100 per cent effort. They have been training hard and it has paid off. A big thanks must go to under 8s Liam Peterson and Thomas Mitchell who filled in to make up the numbers. Best for Glen Innes were Ashley Whitehead whose tackling was great as always, Jacob Hodge who made some great breaks and tackled well, and Thomas Chard who was unstoppable and saved a couple of tries with great tackles. Encouragement awards went to Jacob Hodge and Ashley Whitehead.

The under 12s traveled to Uralla last Saturday to play the leading team in the competition. The final score being 24-4 but this was not a true indication of the game with the Glen Innes team being very competitive for a lot of the game. Jamie Hogan caused the Uralla defence a great deal of trouble with his hard running until he injured his knee. Brock Simpkins was another to stand out with his hard running making several good breaks during the game. Ryan Wilson, the smallest player on the field, showed great commitment in defence making many good tackles on much larger kids. Jake Willis did a good job in organising the teams attack but in the end the large amount of possession that Uralla had took its toll. Uralla showed our boys that if you spread out and pass the ball well across the backline the tries will come. It was good to see that we had 20 players turn up to an away game.

The men are just going from strength to strength. They are proving a bit to hard to handle, beating Uralla well, 44 points to six. Sam Schiffman was a stand out as usual with four tries. Jay Wilson had a blinder of a game racking up a try from the kick off. Harley Wright went under the posts for a couple and Brendon Jillett added another one to his collection and did some great goal kicking. The team played their usual up the middle onslaught, Ace Holliss and Jay Gallagher, the smaller men of the pack, worked continuously in attack and amazing defence. Damien Hamel was in attack mode once again with some great strong hard runs. Martin Newsome, Patrick Hogan and Max Crossley played great football, and really under some pressure from the Uralla attack held them to only six points. Alex Mossman and Alex Alt controlled the ruck well and never looked under pressure. Jesse Mossman or ‘Mr Cool’ was just that cool, calm and precise and it is showing in his games every week. Matt Shaw played a great match showing the boys some real grunt. A special thanks to Tom Ruming and Pearce Hayden for stepping up from the 12s. They both played great games and are an asset to the 12s side. Thanks boys. Points went to 3 Jay Wilson 2 Tom Ruming 1 Jay Gallagher and the Bob Sloman award went to Alex Alt.
