Minor league record wins n senior age groups

15/05/2008 9:42:00 AM
Last Saturday the Glen Innes Minor League Magpies took on the Uralla Tigers.

The under 8s team all played well having to combine with the Uralla side due to lack of numbers in both teams.

Glen Innes under 12s came up against a well drilled Uralla team.

In the first half the Glen Innes boys were bluffed in defence leaving the half time score at 20 to nil.

They performed strongly in the second half coming back with a full time score of 24-6. The older heads of Jamie Hogan, Nic Crisp, Jesse Martin and Kerod Williamson performed strongly. Brandon Cocco, Drew Petersen and Robbie Hamel played well being under 11. The highlight of the game was newcomers Brock Simpkins, Matt Onslow and Matt Newsome having outstanding games.

Three points went to Jamie Hogan, two points to Brock Simpkins, one point to Brandon Cocco and the Bob Sloman Encouragement Award to Matt Onslow.

The under 14s are off to a flying start after a big win in Armidale 43-20 last week the boys backed up for a win against Uralla 32-28.

The margin could have been a lot more but the boys let themselves down with poor ball handling skills and some bad decisions. All in all they played a tough game.

The forwards are really taking it to the other packs, Sam Schiffman and Brendon Jillett are really pulling off some big tackles and running with unstoppable steam, the defence from Dylan Watson, Ace Hollice and Max Crossley has also helped often keeping the other team back in their own half. Alex Mosman and Alex Alt are both taking on the hooking role well and controlling the middle of the paddock. The back line is playing with some real fire lead by Joel Stone and working closely with Jesse Mosman really causing some havoc close to the ruck and the outside backs Rhyton Compton and Patrick Hogan are being very safe and showing off some real skills with the ball. Our new imports for the year Jai Perkins, Martin Newsome, Damien Hamel and Matt Shaw for kids who have not played the game of rugby league before are really showing some talent and adding to a great football team. Last but not least are 2 boys who have really stepped up to the competition this year the first Jay Gallagher who is playing great football since stepping up from the 12s finding the gaps and really becoming a thinking footballer and the second is Harley Wright, this young man has really stepped up to the plate scoring some great tries and being very ruthless in defence, he is going to be a young player to watch in the future.

Glen Innes under 16’s returned to the winning list with a 64-10 win over Uralla on Saturday.

The boys were boosted this week with four new recruits who all put their hands up on the day and contributed to a good team performance. The team played well with leadership from Tim Grob and Aaron Cocco who controlled the game.

Hayden Johnson was on the spot to score 4 tries , other scorers were Tim Grob 3, Cody Wilson 2, Beau Dawson 2 with JH Williamson and A Cocco 1 each.

The Glen Innes forwards turned in a great performance in both defence and attack which allowed the backs to throw the ball around and score some very good trys.

The Glen Innes magpies have the bye this weekend apart from the 16s who play Guyra at Guyra. However we will be holding a skills day at Mead Park from 10am on Saturday for all those interested players. A free sausage sizzle will also be provided for lunch. More information will be provided at training on Thursday afternoon.
