Magpies trample Tigers

7/08/2008 10:36:00 AM
THE Glen Innes Magpies turned on a brilliant display of rugby league to thrash second-placed Uralla by 70 points to 12 at Mead Park on Saturday.

Neither side was at full strength. Glen were without playmaker Jason Ferris and strong second rower Damian Doust while Jacob Key left the field after five minutes with an ankle injury and did not return. Uralla’s Clarrie Moran started the game from the bench with a heavily strapped leg and some other regulars were missing from the opposition side.

Backed by the biggest Mead Park crowd in years, Glen’s opening salvos blitzed the Tigers, scoring four tries in the opening 11 minutes, and the locals went on with the job right through the first half to lead 44-6 at the break. Uralla scored just a converted try in each half against a dominant defence which maintained commitment throughout.

In the second minute, fullback Mark Muggleton began the scoring feast with a four point try. Sam Key’s converted fifth minute try took the score to 10-0 and 14-0 after eight minutes when hooker Mitch Berridge brilliantly juggled a kick to lay off to Daniel Ferris who scored under the posts.

In the eleventh minute, half Aaron Jones got the first of his four tries after his own 40 - 20 kick. Jamie Watts got the first of his hat-trick of four pointers in the 19th minute, then backed up a break by Jones three minutes later to score again. Shad Bailey had the radar working fairly well and was adding the extras most times and Glen raced to a 32-0 lead after twenty two minutes.

Watts made a nice break in the 28th minute with a flying Berridge in support for another four pointer and 38-0. Uralla’s Dane Poss got the visitor’s first points with a good try, converted by Fred Waters, but Ferris got his second try just before the break and Glen led 44-6 after a scintillating display of rugby league.

Glen’s forwards were setting a solid platform and the speedy set of backs, crisp and sharp in their work, were taking control.

In the 52nd minute Jones chipped ahead and re-gathered for a try. Soon after another Jones kick resulted in Watts’ third for the afternoon and a 54-6 advantage. Key’s kick on the hour brought a try to centre Joel Jackson while Jones got his third soon after with a try out wide which he converted for 66-6.

Justin Fox crossed for Uralla in the 76th minute but the game ended in the manner the big crowd had enjoyed. Jackson made a long break with Jones in support and once the dynamic half got the ball in broken field it was ‘shut the gate’. New father Jake Chard missed the conversion attempt as the siren sounded.

The Magpies did not have a poor player. Each man did his job admirably and the defensive commitment lasted all game with a superb cover tackle from three players halting a certain try at the corner post with two minutes left.

Glen’s winning run now extends to 11 games, with the minor premiership firmly in their sights. They host Armidale this Saturday with the chance to reach the dynamic dozen.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
