Glen Innes Magpies A Grade team scored fourteen tries in their 76 - 22 victory over 2007 premiers, Warialda, on Saturday.
A committed team effort saw eight different players amongst the try-scorers and ten players nominated in players’ player voting.
Glen made a couple of early errors but turned back the Wombats’ attack and the first time the Magpies got into the home team’s red zone, fullback Mark Muggleton sliced through from thirty metres for a good try. Jason Ferris converted for a 6 - 0 lead.
Aaron Jones and Sam Key combined superbly before Ferris planted the ball over the line for a ten point lead. Sam Key, Will Newberry and Jones combined beautifully before Ferris’ long pass found centre Joel Jackson in the clear. Warialda kicked out on the full from the re-start and Glen attacked strongly. Several long passes saw Jackson steam onto the ball for his second try. Ferris missed the conversion but Glen led 20 - 0.
Glen got a bit mixed up on their final tackle play but Sam Key and Ferris combined beautifully at the end of it for Ferris to force his way over in the corner. Glen 24 - 0. The Magpies were in total control and Jones broke through to find replacement Jamie Watts in support for an un-contested try under the posts. Ferris handed the kicking duties to Sam Key who landed the first of his six goals from eight attempts and Glen led 30 - 0.
A bad pass from Shad Bailey which went straight to Wombats centre Matt Cleal, saw the home team post their first points with Cleal’s try. Soon after the Wombats went in again after scrambling play following a grubber on the final tackle. Glen 30 - 12.
Right on half-time, Jackson snatched a high-bouncing ball out of the air and raced away for his hat-trick. Glen led 36 - 12 at the break.
Warialda attacked strongly after the re-start and forward Andrew McNamara got through near the posts after an extended period of defensive work looked likely to turn Warialda back. Soon after, Warialda knocked on and Damian Doust went close. Ferris spun the ball wide to young Nick Ehsman who did good work to score in the corner. Glen 40 - 18.
Warialda dominated possession for a period and finally put Cleal over out wide for his second try but that was all the scoring the Wombats could achieve as Glen took total control and Warialda’s intensity dropped off late in the game.
Jones got his first during a repeat set in Warialda’s quarter before Mitch Berridge was held up over the line. Key chipped over the defence and Muggleton dived full length to secure the ball and score in the corner. Key landed a superb conversion for 52 - 22.
Newberry scored in the same corner off a Ferris pass soon after and Key again added the extra two points. Jones pounced on a loose ball to score in the corner and again Key was successful. Glen 64 - 22.
Bailey’s nice pass to a flying Muggleton saw the fullback in under the posts for his hat-trick and Bailey added the extras for the Magpies to lead 70 - 22. Doust got the final try after an excellent game and Bailey kicked the goal from wide out.
Glen was able to spell Ferris and Key in the final few minutes but the Magpies still put on some nice tries.
In the absence of Dave Stanfield (knee), Jake Chard played in the front row and had his best game of the season. Jake Key had a great game, but the entire side played excellent football. They combined well and were more patient in attack than was the case against Guyra the previous week. Debutant Mark Mabbott was outstanding in defence and enjoyed his first taste of first grade.
The Magpies have racked up nine wins in a row since their first round loss to Tingha. They get the opportunity to avenge that loss this Saturday when Glen travels to Tingha for a crucial game.
