Ladies produce best form of season in their sudden death defeat

2/09/2008 5:00:00 AM
Glen’s Ladies OzTag team was gallant in defeat against minor premiers, Inverell, going down 8 - 7 in extra time in an exciting match that kept the crowd’s interest throughout.

The match featured many fine attacking raids but the difference, in the end, was the five tries scored by Inverell flyer Anna Akhurst.

Both sides defended well early but it was Glen who opened the scoring with Courtney Grange’s fifth minute try after some excellent ball movement to clear the ruck area. Kirsty Grange’s good tagging saved a couple of tries shortly after but Hollie Bloch got Inverell on the board before Akhurst and Rachel Sutton both scored for the visitors and Inverell led 3 - 1.

Tash Davis celebrated her after-the-siren try in great style as she narrowed the gap to 3 - 2 at the break.

Inverell’s Bec Kent scored soon after the break to take a 4 - 2 lead but then Glen hit a golden period that saw them score three tries in as many minutes without Inverell touching the ball except for re-starts.

A nice inside ball from Megan Fuller saw Fiona Williamson hit the gap and race 45 metres to score. From the kick-off, Kirsty Grange took the ball on the full and scooted down the touchline for a great try to level at 4 - all.

Inverell kicked off much deeper this time and to the other side of the field, but here it was Courtney Grange who caught the ball and went the length of the field. Glen 5 - 4. But Akhurst got two quick tries to put Inverell back in front before Fuller leveled again with a great dummy and dart through the gap.

Williamson scored a fine try to put Glen back in front but Akhurst scored a late try to level at 7 - all at fulltime. The girls then went into sudden-death extra time with the first team to score being the winners. Glen held out for a full set on their line but eventually, Akhurst used her speed to round the defence and send Inverell to the grand final.

The Glen girls travel to Tingha next Sunday where they meet Armidale for the second grand final position.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
