Glen 18s minor premiers

Glen Innes Under 18s overcame a sluggish start and a highly proficient Guyra side to take out an exciting game by 26 - 22.

Guyra opened with tries to Steve Everley (2nd minute), Mick Dittman (16th) and Ewan Torrens (23rd) while Glen’s only first half response was a converted try to Jake Turner and the home team led 16 - 6 at the break.

The young Magpies had fumbled their way through an unimpressive half hour and Guyra thoroughly deserved their lead. Glen was not switched on and paid the price of some poor handling and passing and their lack of urgency.

Joel Jackson got the second half off to a better start with a good second minute try, converted by Turner, although Guyra immediately hit back with a try to Simon Porter and Guyra led 22 - 12.

Adrian Wadley then carved up the defence with a series of good runs that produced tries for the young centre in the 13th and 16th minute, the second from a 50 metre run. Turner converted the second try to level scores at 22 - all.

A strong 30 metre run from replacement forward Toby Scheutz provided the platform for a good passing rush which resulted in a try, wide out, to winger James Ryan. Glen led 26 - 22 with ten minutes remaining and hung on for a determined win.

Second rower Matt Crowhurst suffered an ankle injury while Ross Lewis will not play again this season because of a collar bone break from the previous match against Armidale.

Mark Mabbott had his best game for some time and was very strong throughout. Adam McPhillips and Sam Kiehne had good games while Wadley and Jackson played well in the backs. Steve Reynolds made some good tackles and saved a couple of early tries that could have made a big difference to the outcome.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
