Volleyballers take it to state’s best

10/07/2008 11:00:00 AM
Glen Innes High School’s open boys and girls volleyball teams returned from the state finals in Sydney last week with rankings just outside the top ten.

The teams both placed 12th in the state last year and while the girls maintained that place the boys went one better to finish in eleventh against highly competitive and experienced teams.

On the final day of play on Thursday both had two final matches to determine where they would place in the positions 9-12 after one win and one lose the previous day.

The boys team travelled to Sydney with just one reserve but were in impressive form as they narrowly lost their first match 2-1sets but won their second 2-0 sets to finish just one position short of the top ten.

The team was coached by Johnny Elliot and featured Jonathan Bell, Scott Miller, Charles Farlow, Daniel Bell, Mason Baker and Zac Lynn.

The girls were not so lucky in their matches but showed flair with their second being fought to the end. Coach Robyn Thomas said the team played extremely well despite losing both.

“Against Great Lakes they lost two sets to nil but they were a really good team and possibly should have been in the top eight had they not played the eventual winners in the first round. In their second match they played Plumpton and won the first set 25-14 but then lost the second 25-17 and the third 15-12,” she said.

“They were close matches and the girls played very well to come 12th overall considering the teams in Sydney are competing every week and we have limited competition.”

The girls’ team was made up of Lucy Muldoon, Gemma Tierney, Maddie Ritchie, Roxane Francis, Savannah Grills, Lehlia Kamphorst, Jess Dunn, Belinda Southgate and Natalie Whan.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
