Reserves surge into top four

16/07/2008 6:29:00 PM
The Magpies’ Presidents Cup team continued their fine run of recent form with a comprehensive win over Guyra, 56 - 14

Glen could not have had a better start when they forced Guyra into error near their own line in the first minute. From the scrum win, Glen spun the ball wide and James Sheridan charged over on the first tackle.

Damian Doust took control of the match after Guyra leveled through Cody Patterson with two tries in the seventh and fifteenth minutes. Jamie Watts was making ground every time he ran from dummy half and Glen continued to take advantage when Jason Patterson scored. Ian Hope (eight goals) was kicking well and Glen led 22 - 4 before Jason Gee got Guyra on the board again late in the first half.

The second half belonged to big Chris Elvins who wore a track down one side of the field as he crossed for four tries in a powerful display. In between, a barging Elvins run set up Peter Fields for a fine try under the posts and Doust scored a magnificent individual try, from nothing, to post his hat-trick.

Artie Latham’s constructive play was a big factor for the Magpies as was their defence which has improved in leaps and bounds since two horrific efforts against Uralla and Armidale a month ago.

Big Marty Cochrane continues to impress with his powerful running and controlled aggression on the field while Aaron Swaffer had some fine moments in attack and defence.

Doust scored three tries and got though a mountain of tackling in a terrific match for the Magpies who moved into a semi final spot with the defeat of Bingara by Inverell on Saturday.
