Parsonage and Smort cut loose

19/08/2008 10:22:00 AM
The annual Shearer’s Duathlon was held on Sunday, in Glen Innes.

A field of 6 teams endured the cool, breezy morning to challenge themselves on a rolling racecourse. The relay event involved teams of two alternating between running and riding a bicycle to travel a distance of approximately 10km and 22km.

A strong contingent of Armidale and Glen Innes athletes made the event memorable. In the long course, the pairing of Michael Smort and Mathew Parsonage showed great strength in the run to win the event in a time of 1 hour 21 minutes. Despite suffering a flat tire at the midway of the course, Zac Gazzard and Robert Herd came in second with a time of 1 hour 30 minutes. Jerome and Susan Hayden challenged each other to finish bravely in third. Jesse Perciville and Campbell Jones finished the course in 1 hour 42 minutes as the team ran and pedaled side-by-side throughout the entire course. These athletes really put in a great effort to cover the long and challenging course so well.

The local team of Steve Toms and Rick Ott finished first in the short course while the father/son team of Graham and Harrison Miller finished second. Dennis Hazelwood also competed and created his own challenging course to test his running and cycling prowess.

The final event for the winter duathlon series will be held on Sunday September 14 starting at the Glen Innes Saleyards at 9:30am. This is an individual event and everyone is invited to come. Refreshments are provided at the finish and there is no cost to participate.

The Glen Gallop Committee held their AGM after the event and new officers were elected for the coming year. As a result, Rick Ott will be acting as president, Bob Dent as Vice-President, Kathleen Cook as Secretary, Graham Miller as Treasurer, and Susan Hayden as Publicity Officer. 16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
