Mountain Duathlon hits Ben Lomond

15/05/2008 9:47:00 AM
The Glen Gallop Committee is once again preparing for the Glen Innes Winter Duathlon series. The first event will be held this weekend Sunday May 18th. The race will be held at the picturesque Ben Lomond peaks in the New England ranges.

The full “Iron Person” event involves cycling to each direction (north, south, east, and west) from Ben Lomond village. At the bottom of each hill, the competitors leave their bikes and begin running/walking/crawling to the top of the nearby hill. Once the peak is reached a downhill jog brings you back to your bicycle and to the next peak. The peaks are clearly marked as are the dismounting points; the route is up to you!

The full event includes a ride of 26km in total with around 8km of running. The world record for the event is held by local, Brendan Reynolds, in a time of 1 hour, 36 minutes. The “Tin Person” event includes the first two peaks for a total cycling distance of 16km and around a 4 km run. This event takes about an hour to finish depending on fitness levels.

The 4 Peaks will begin at the Ben Lomond tennis courts with registration at 9:30am for a prompt 10:00am start. There is no entry fee but bring some warm clothes and plan to stay for a cup of soup and a sausage sizzle after we finish. Bring your own chair and water for the finish.
