Superb defence was the cornerstone for Glen Innes Magpies’ A Grade crushing 60 - 0 win over arch rivals Guyra at Mead Park on Sunday.
The Magpies made plenty of mistakes in attack with loose passing the main culprit in failing to complete many sets but their ability to create magnificent tries from any point of the field saw the Magpies run in eleven tries in total while Jason Ferris landed eight goals. Glen led 28 - 0 at half time and went right on with the job after the break. Guyra stalwarts reckon it was twenty years since their team had failed to score a point in any match.
Sam Key’s brilliant run along the western touchline opened the scoring in the fifth minute, then on the quarter hour Key made another break for halfback Aaron Jones to be in perfect position to take the inside pass and score under the posts. Ferris goaled for 10 - nil.
Two minutes later winger Joel Jackson picked up a loose ball on his own thirty metres and raced away. Herded towards to opposite touchline by a cover defender, Jackson braced himself, pushed the would-be tackler away with a powerful fend, stepped the fullback and scored between the posts. Ferris added the extras.
Jamie Watts, replacement hooker, stretched out to reach the line after a dart from dummy half (21st minute) and Will Newberry raced 60 metres (25th minute) for more Glen Innes points. The only time Guyra looked like scoring, Mark Muggleton bundled centre Dan Clyde-Smith into touch with a copybook diving tackle.
Glen finished the half a man short when hooker Mitch Berridge was sin-binned for a professional foul. But the setback didn’t stop the Magpies who regained the ball from the kick-off and Sam Key ran onto a cut-out pass from Ferris in the first set to score again. Newberry got his second try soon after; Jones got his second after another great Ferris pass, the Jackson scored his second running onto a pass from Jacob Key.
Muggleton and Jackson combined nicely to send Daniel Ferris over in the corner and Jackson passed to replacement winger Nick Ehsman who scooted over wideout.
There was plenty of tough, hard tackling throughout the match and Guyra kept on trying until the end. Their best were forwards Jeff Richardson and Rod Bull while Glen had a host of excellent performers in an outstanding team effort.
While the purist would not have enjoyed the amount of ball squandered, there was a lot to like about Glen’s outstanding defensive effort. Very few first-up tackles were missed and when they were the cover wrapped up the ball runner and removed the danger.
Jason Ferris’ ball distribution was excellent while both Key brothers had outstanding games. Muggleton, Jackson, prop Dave Stanfield (on his birthday), fresh forward Tim Every and Shad Bailey all had fine games while every player contributed to the Magpies eighth win in succession.
