Glen Innes - Guyra 22 all
Glen Innes and Guyra Under 18s produced a mistake-riddled performance that nevertheless kept the interest of the crowd because of the closeness of the scores. In the end, Guyra blew a ‘gimme’ penalty kick at goal just ten metres out with four minutes left when prop Blake Keeping took the tap with all his team-mates imploring him to go for goal and the match finished at 22 - all.
Matt Crowhurst picked up a loose ball on the Guyra line after Joel Jackson forced the ball loose with a powerful tackle and opened the scoring in the fourteenth minute. Jake Turner landed the goal for a 6 - 0 lead to the home team but Guyra hit back almost immediately with a converted try to hooker Mick Ditman.
Jackson stormed onto the ball just out from the line and crashed through for a good try under the posts. Fullback Michael Adams scored a great try from the kick-off, running a long way to plant the ball under the posts and Glen led 18 - 6 but were not playing to their best ability.
They made many handling errors and played far too shallow in attack. As a result, they were trying to move the ball with defenders up in their faces and a lot of loose passes resulted.
Ditman got his second try on the bell for half time and the Spuds trailed by just a converted try at the break.
Immediately after the break, winger Simon Porter scored after Guyra put in a chip kick and toed the ball ahead three times. Glen led 18 - 16 but Guyra soon took the lead when Steve Everley crossed the line and Euan Torrens converted for a 22 - 18 advantage. Torrens grabbed an intercept when Glen was close to scoring and looked set to score but Glen winger Andrew Grob chased Torrens down and made a try saving tackle.
Glen’s other winger Ross Lewis finished off some good team work with a nice try seven minutes from time but Nick Ehsman’s conversion attempt was wide. Both sides tried hard to break the deadlock but Guyra had the better chances including a field goal attempt after the botched penalty which should have won them the game.
Second rower Tobias Scheutz and replacement Tim Croft were standouts for the Magpies late in the match with some terrific tackling under pressure. Ehsman played well throughout while Jackson made some good runs and Tom McCarney played strongly. Lewis had his best game for some time and was always dangerous with the ball inhand.
