RESIDENTS at two aged care facilities will be taking advantage of a generous donation of hand knitted rugs this winter.
Four of the 16 colourful rugs, hand made by Lions Ladies and several non-Lions Group ladies, were presented to the residents of Roseneath on Monday.
Project co-ordinator Ann Barratt, wife of Lions Club member John Barratt, said four rugs were donated to Roseneath on Monday, with another four to be donated to Glen Innes Hospital, four to Emmaville Hospital and four to Glenwood, which were given on Thursday.
Lions member Darryl Davy said each year a decision is made as to what project the Lions women will undertake.
“Last year children’s clothes were made and distributed overseas,” he said.
“This year, as usual, all clubs in the district were given the opportunity to take on the rug-making project. Some took up the offer and about 1,000 rugs have been made,” he said.
“We hope the residents get many hours of warmth out of them.”
Roseneath activities officer Maria Duck said people should be made aware of the wonderful work done behind the scenes.
“There are a lot of unsung heroes and heroines in our midst,” she said.
“It’s the little things such as knitting rugs and donating them that help bind a community together and keep a support network going.”
Deputy Manager of Roseneath Sybil Mahlangu thanked the knitters for their generosity.
“These gifts will be well used and appreciated,” she said.
On Thursday rugs were presented to Glenwood Gardens manager Col Francis and Glenwood Auxiliary president Pat Curr and secretary Beth White.
The gesture of warmth was welcomed by the Glenwood representatives who all felt it was the ideal size for the residents.
“We really want to thank them for the continued support and the rugs will definitely go to good use,” Mrs Curr said.
Residents of Glenwood were also treated to generosity from the Glenwood Auxiliary who were able to purchase a $3,200 regency care chair that is now in use following a morning tea held on June 26.
