Grey St reverts to two lanes

28/08/2008 11:23:00 AM
Three months of partial road closure outside of the Woolworths construction site in Grey Street ended on Monday, when the the western lane was re-opened.

The closure of the lane on May 13 caused traffic flow problems from the Glen Innes and District Services Club at the southern end of the main street to the northern end, with motorists diverted around the block to rejoin the main street.

Local businesses adjacent to the development also felt the effect, claiming many customers avoided the area completely resulting in a substantial loss of business.

Originally proposed to close for just six weeks, the 16-week lane closure has not ended. Additional work is required to be completed on the site with more temporary lane closures anticipated.

Glen Innes Severn Council spokesperson said that council is currently in negotiations with country energy to remove a streetlight from the construction site blocking the proposed right hand turning lane entrance into the supermarket. Direction paint on the turning lane also needs to be completed.

The spokesperson could not give a time frame for the further lane closure.
