Dancers step up to the beat

26/08/2008 11:21:00 AM
AN energetic array of dancers jumped on the floor of the Glen Innes Services Club auditorium over the weekend for the New England Rock ‘n’ Roll and Swing Dance Championships.

The event, now in its fourth year, continued to grow as it attracted over 200 dancers from around Australia and New Zealand.

Dancers may have travelled great distances to compete but that did not stop locals from proving their worth on the dance floor.

Casey McCarthy of Glen Innes and Stuart Baker of Inverell (pictured right) displayed their prowess in all categories to be named the junior overall champion of champions.

Glen Innes dancers Jonathan Bell and Caitlin Turner were also in fine form as they won the all round youth and under 17 harlem swing lindee hop category.

The senior champion of champions crown went to the Queensland pairing of Adrian Venz and Beverley Turner.

Event organiser Marcia Summers was pleased with the outcome of the event and the public response throughout the weekend.

“It was a wonderful weekend. The mayor (Steve Toms) and Richard Torbay were very impressed and the towns of Glen Innes and Inverell have given us their full support. There were a lot of spectators which was great to see,” she said.

The dance championships are expected to continue to increase in the years to come with further interest expressed over the weekend.

“We had entries from seven studios from around Australia and are expecting it to grow further next year. There was quite a bit of interest from those who came from New Zealand and we are expecting a lot more from there next year,” Ms Summers said.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
